Just a wild guess, Greg -

But that sequence MAY have been the very last eastbound freight.  IIRC, it was originally planned as a two-engine train, but one of the engineers (Andy Payne?) laid off 'cause he knew it was the very last one and wanted to chase it and get photos.  As a result, there was only one crew available for the run, so the train was shortened by enough cars to give #498 at least half a chance of making it to Chama on her own . . .
