LCL refers to "Less than Carload Lots" - in other words the kind of freight handled today as "LTL" (than trralerload lots") by motor carriers like "Overnight" ,"Old Dominion", or Con-Way" It was the job of brakemen to unload package freight from a train's LCL car and put it in the freight house for later customer pickup. In the case of the DRGW, the Rio Grand Motorway subsidiary eventually took over this traffic.. By the way, LCL is NOT "Express" Express traffic was expedited and handled in passenger trains, accompanied by and express messenger who handled loading and unloading at stations. The Railway Express Agency also provided door to door pickup and delivery i many locations.
