Thank You, Ed -
That report is fascinating!! What a labor of love and dedication - and the result is BEAUTIFUL! I'm really glad that I asked about this.
And just to prove that I read the whole thing, I was pleased to note near the bottom of the last page a photo of S.P. #4300 - the first of more than six dozen 4-8-2's built for (and by) the Southern Pacific. IMHO these were among the all-time most attractive standard-gauge passenger locos ever built. And that photo explains why the 28 MT-1's built by Alco-Schenectady in 1923-24 have long been the subject of debate as to their color schemes – they had plannished-iron jackets!
Youse guys are about as far from my home in Southern California as anywhere in the continental U.S., so I probably won't be privileged to see #9 in person. Please keep the photos coming!!
