Finally, spring to Chama in late May and it was time to get to work. The first thing the Kyle people had to fix was a land slip above MP 336. Improper drainage on the highway above had caused the spring runoff to soak into the ground at the highway and come out 20 feet below the track. The entire roadbed slipped out under the track. Fill was put in the hole, and the next morning, it had sank another several feet, with no end in sight. So, the decision was made to simply shoo-fly around the trouble spot.
And a close up of the trouble. Notice the crack in the ground and subsidance.....
.
I continued over the hill to Antonito, noting there was still 3+ feet of snow at Cumbres. I took some pics of the novelty of snow in May, but nothing new about that. Over in Antonito, one of the new cars was sitting outside to be admired One thing I noticed was the lack of a number on the car. I guess with a name we don't need numbers.....
A few days later I went up to newly named "Kyle's Kink" to see the progress.
Notice a light left hand curve in the lower part. There is a large rock in the hill side that resisted all forms of blasting so, we "re-shooflyed the shoofly" around it. The rock also extended under the track and resisted other attempts to remove that portion too, so in addition to another wiggle, we had a little hump in the track too.
