This flies in the face of what almost every train fan already knows:
1. You can NEVER count on a steam locomotive to be operable for a future timeframe. Problems that can't be fixed for various reasons crop up from time to time and make a locomotive cold again (sometimes forever). Management may decide to shelve steam or stop running completely, seemingly out of the blue. Like a pal of mine always says, "Ride it while you can, because tomorrow, it may be gone forever," which has turned out to be exactly the case for me on several occasions
2. Few things are more exciting than the first run(s) of a steam locomotive that hasn't run in a very long time. Far more so for a type nobody has seen running in decades.
