If you can keep it under control, then it's the right way. I used to open the valve, set the reverse lever in a spot where I could fine tune my speed using the independent brake (with the drivers cut out - so I was only using the tender). That was easier than moving the Johnson Bar all the time. One thing I learned the hard way was never use the drifting throttle and the independent with the driver brakes at the same time!. If you grab too much air, the drivers will lock up, immediately the cylinders will fill up with steam, when you release the brakes the engine will break loose and starting spinning - in reverse!
That will get your attention real quick.
