I understood the schedule changes were due to placate the complainers in Farmington who wanted a better connection to the passenger train at Durango. Also, the locomotive and the cars from the Silverton Mixed could be used on the Farmington train.
The Farmington powers that be were more unhappy with the service than happy, except when the railroad ended it. There was a story that circulated through the Daily Times about the ruined newsprint. Shortly after the Times wrote a blistering editorial about the poor service the railroad provided a narrow gauge boxcar loaded with newsprint rolls arrive in Farmington. The car was unloaded and the rolls were left on the loading dock. Nobody at the railroad called the newspaper to come and get it. In the meantime it rained.
I believe the 1923 timetable showed a standard gauge operation.
