If Perlman had got his way, Cumbres would have been abandoned along with Marshall Pass in 1955.
There is a great story that RWR tells of back in 1952. The Grande was saying they didn't have enough equipment to handle the traffic. And a guy from EPNG (El Paso Natural Gas) came to Bob, posing as a modeler asking exactly where all the equipment was. When he said there were engines and cars idle up in Salida/Gunnison that could be moved down here to handle the traffic, the guy kept saying "Really? Are you sure?". I can't remember if the guy actually went up to Salida to take pictures of all this stuff or not. Sometime later, another guy from EPNG came by and told him he almost got subpoenaed to appear before the ICC in Washington DC when EPNG went to the ICC to demand the Grande haul their stuff. The Grande caved in, brought in extra motive power and rolling stock, installed more transfer equipment, and Perlman went home mad. His dream of scrapping the Narrow Gauge by the mid-1950's was foiled.
