Crews weren't shy about backing up. On my first trip on the C&TS we backed up all the way from Sublette to Big Horn. IIRC the Falfa helpers backed all the way to Durango. The prize, as far as I know, to the Jacobite in Scotland, which backs all the way from Mallaig to Fort William, 42 miles. Driver John Hunt said the engine crew really gets wet when it is raining and the water comes in over the tender.
