The big problem with the old C&S was actually weight. The C&S never did many track upgrades, they still used 40 pound rail, and light bridges because their equipment was light. They did studies in the 30's about the cost to upgrade the line, which was profitable at the time, for larger engines. I've heard a few times that it was the CB&Q that pushed for abandonment rather then the C&S.

A K-27 could easily have operated on the South Park branch....if the rail was upgraded and bridges strengthened. Today at the Loop, we run 75 pound rail, with bridges designed for large engines. A K-27 or K-28 could operate up here with minor changes (a blind driver would help), but K-36 and K-37's are too wide and too long to fit through many parts of the line.
