The first one I rode was long after the demise of the RGS but before the third rail was removed between Alamosa and Antonito and the entire narrow gauge railroad removed from Chama to Durango. Not counting the superfluous standard gauge third rail between Alamosa and Antonito, these charters in the early 60's were 100% narrow gauge (and 100% steam-powered).
The usual itinerary was Alamosa to Durango (via La Jara, Antonito, Sublette, Osier, Chama, Dulce, Gato & Ignacio) on Day One, Durango to Silverton & return on Day Two, and Durango to Alamosa (via Ingnacio, Gato, Monero, Lumberton, Chama, Sublette, Antonito and La Jara) on Day Three. IIRC, one or two of the late fifties - early sixties charters included an extra day for a side trip from Durango to Farmington. For a few fuzzy fotos of the June, 1960 charter see [
