Another point is the standard gauging of the line to Ridgway in 1954 was way to get the Silverton ore traffic off the narrow gauge and pave the way for the abandonment of the Silverton Branch. After all, once the freight traffic was gone, there would be no reason for the Branch to exist. No one would miss it.
