Nice shot John. Who needs a drone when you "Work for your shots, right"
I hiked in from Cumbres on the first John Craft trip in 1992(october). I was helping him on the second weekend. I had about 40-50 pounds of camera and tripod with me. My shot is similar to Russ's yet different. I have part of it in the preview of the video I did that year. Its about the first 20-30 seconds of the opening. I always liked this view. Of course in the full-length one there is more of the clip.
As part of the Craft shindig we had had to do a lot of hiking. We walked from Coxo crossing up toward to big curve to shoot up at Windy with great sunlight---Also see the video preview for that one. It was the end of the day, and I got help from Sam R(Brakeman) who carried my Tripod as I was about out of gas!!! We also had to hike from the second (middle) section of Whiplash to the top level. That was hard. I skipped the long walk down to Cascade creek from the trestle and got a mediocre shot coming off the bridge.
My dad and I got a unique location across from Osier in 1959-60. Not sure of exact year...may have been 1958. We chased 494-95 out of Alamosa, and then after it left drove in to Osier. We drove down to the River below us, and there was a bridge across it there. There was a logging truck there so it must have been for logging operations on the other side of the river. Anyway, we were up the other side, about even with the track across from us. It was a long train with a mid-train helper. We were able to shoot that, and return to Osier in time for some switching as they dropped off some B&B cars. Shadows were getting really long by the time the duo left for Cumbres. I tried to get across there in 1992(day before the Craft Trip), and punctured the oil pan of a mini-van, and never made it down to the river itself. That was a mis-adventure with no results.
