Great idea, Doug -
Not just a demo, but a really worthwhile project. OTOH, Hangman's trestle (aka Ferguson's trestle) near m.p. 285.7 has NOT been culvertised, IIRC, nor has the somewhat shorter and lower trestle about a mile closer to Antonito. The small two-span trestle at m.p. 286.72 was culvertised prior to the 2009 season, and the three-span trestle at m.p. 287.50 was culvertised prior to the 2010 season. Per Dick Cowles, the Commission has become aware of the importance of the trestles to the history of the railroad, and it is unlikely that any more will be lost - see [
ngdiscussion.net]. Restoration of the trestles at 286.72 and 287.50, OTOH, would not be easy - nor would it be inexpensive
. . .
Restoration of the snowshed over the wye at Cumbres would also be a major project, as very little of the original structure is still standing. Here's most of the snowshed on August 28, 1968
