I was the chief geologist and technical services manager at the Fort Knox gold mine near Fairbanks, Alaska in 2001-2003. While living in Fairbanks I read McPhee's book on the miners in the Circle mining district [I think the book was "Up From the Country"?]. Anyway, I was in my office one morning when one of the equipment operators came in to see me. He had the same name as one of McPhee's characters in the book, and I asked him if he was related to the character and he said "that is me, and everything John wrote was true!". Talk about a small world.
