Easily my favorite of his books as well. I grew up in Tujunga, CA and was in junior high the year of the 1980 (?) mudflows he describes in that book. One of my friends ended up with a casket in her front yard from the cemetery up the road that washed out.
John's ability to make almost anything interesting and captivating is a real gift. Reading some of your older posts, I can see you inherited some of that literary ability.
