I rode the Loop on July 16, with No. 9 and No. 1203 in service to handle the nine-car train. Leaving the lower end at Georgetown, it seemed to me that both engines were working pretty hard. At times on the uphill trip to Silver Plume, the diesel was smoking more and nearly drowned out the Shay. Based on my experience over the years with both geared engines and diesels, I'd say neither one could have made it to the top without the other.
