Whitney did have an engine house that was built in 1937. It was one stall and located on the wye tail track. You can find some remains of it today and see where they had a service pit. The tail of the wye was elevated above the adjacent ground, so the pit is more of an interruption in raised grade with timbers around it. I took some photos of it, but the sagebrush is so tall and thick in that area that nothing in the photos is worth sharing. We have AFE records giving more details of construction. The only turntable on the SVRy was at S. Baker. There were wyes at S. Baker, McEwen, S Wye, Sumpter, Larch, Whitney, Tipton (in later years), White Pine, Dixie and at Prairie City. There were balloon tracks at Tipton and Austin. Austin had a 4 stall engine house, but as stated no turntable, just a ladder track. We have had some discussion about whether a wye existed at Bates. If so two legs of it would have been OLC trackage, that is if there was a track running between the mill and the hillside to the west that connected back into the SVRy main just above the mill. There was a track coming up behind the mill from the Middle Fork line that went to a lumber loading area, but based on photos I have not been able to confirm it connected back to the SVRy main.
