On a Break-in run, the Diesel does all the work....in Dynamic Brake setting, thus creating a variable load for which to work the steamer against. You can't get that with a train unless there are varing grades on which to run it over. Besides if the staemer breaks then the Diesel can remove it from the mainline.
Been there done that job, a lot of fun dragging a loco to its knees.
