A well written post, Randy.
Rotating the 476 into the shop and the photograph of the 482s new side rods are just the tip of the iceberg. Several other locomotive projects are well underway and some even nearly completed as part of the maintenance plan. The 486 is the most recent recipient of a healthy dose of work that included a cab rebuild, stay bolt cap inspection (as per FRA regulations), brand new cross head guides on both sides, a new crosshead and shoe for the right side, brand new pistons and piston rods, brand new cylinder heads for the front and rear on the left side, and a brand new main rod for the right side. The last item officially eliminates all the old wrist pin split bushings on our K-36s.
Here's an image of the new left side crosshead guides. The right side guides are also now completed. Sorry Randy, I couldn't resist.
The 480 and 482 both received large amounts of boiler and running gear work over the winter as well. 481 was fresh from a 1472 overhaul last fall and is performing very well.
