For a long time as I watched the 493 deteriorate in Silverton, I wondered if it would come to life, and today, as I heard it creaking softly going into the curve of the wye, it seemed like the engine had started to awaken, and for some reason, it felt like the soul had returned to a dead engine. I came to know the 493 late in the engine's operating life, and I have the photos and some movie footage from those days, and now I have to make sure I live another 10 years to see it really charge forth pulling tonnage upgrade once again. Politics and hocus pocus aside, it's the celebration of saving the narrow gauge that matters.
