The fact that the CRRM is so financial healthy may be evidence of how much the museum has changed since the good (bad?) old days when it was a seat of the pants operation run by Bob and Cornelius. Perhaps one of the reasons the 493 deal caught so many of us by surprise is we still tend to think of the CRRM in terms of a couple little teakettles puffing around a tight loop of bad track, and it is hard to imagine the 491 or the 493 hauling a relatively long train. I personally have a lot of nostalgia for the old days, but realistically the museum's leaders probably deserve a round of applause for a job well done. But at the same time I think Jason raises legit issues in terms of managing the "tension" between need for fund raising and the goal of historic preservation and interpretation.
