Since our number four is at this time the only operating Vauclain Compound locomotive around. We decided to place the Baldwin class number on both side of the locomotive. This class of locomotive was very small in the total number of engines built. Research has shown that Baldwin, made a class designation for this type locomotive, placed this number on all construction drawings, orders and catalogs but did not place the class designation lettering on any of the built locomotives. Although not historical correct, the class lettering on our locomotive is meant to represent and promote interest, and generate questions on this type of steam locomotive.
To answer your question: what does 6 -14/24-1/3-C stand for
6 - total number of wheels
14/24- cylinder diameter in inches (fraction indicates a compound type locomotive)
1/3 - designates a trailing truck only
C - two pairs of coupled driving wheels
