So all this talk about how far south the three rail vs. two rail track goes has made me curious about something else.
When a particular rail stops, what goes on the end of the last rail. I've looked at sidings here on the UP (SG of course) and there are usually some form of stop or end of rail device to keep strays from rolling off the track. Sometimes it's a pile of ties, sometimes it's a bracket to catch the wheel. But, everything I've ever seen sticks up at least as high as the axle. This wouldn't work on a three-rail track since it'd hook the other gauge.
Do ya'll know what they did? Or did they just not care in those days and let the train run off the end of the rail?
Thanks,
Tom
