498 was the first K-37 I ever saw under steam, in 1967 also (I was a bit older!). Caught her at Antonito almost by accident doubled up with 487 on the first freight of the year, June 12, 1967. Started two days of freight chasing!
As I recall she had the most high pitched wimpy whistle on the Rio Grande. The exhaust literally drowned out the whistle as I watched her climbing Cumbres on the morning of the 13th. When they left Antonito on the 12th, with the 487 on the point and 498 cut in about 30 cars back, I was standing alongside the 487 when she whistled off. 498 responded but you couldn't hear it. It was strictly a visual thing, watching for the plume of steam to get the response. 487, on the other hand, had that old round topped brass whistle that was one of the loudest on the narrow gauge.
Thanks, Earl, for rekindling the memories.
