I had left the D&S only 2 years prior to the fire, but the majority of my former co-workers were like family, and the fire effected us all. As Earl says, the result was more space with a better equipped shop. We used to sit around in the old roundhouse call room, either during lunch or after work was finished, and draw up sketches on napkins on what we thought the perfect shop would be. We all had different ideas, but in the end, the new roundhouse and back shop was pretty much what we were all dreaming of.
I am glad I got to work in the old original structure as left by the DRGW, especially with all the old tools and machines that were still around. Unfortunately, it was becoming more and more inadequate for a growing operation and was difficult to work in and in some cases, presented various safety hazards. The historic structure as I knew it is gone, but what has replaced it is much better and I hope, appreciated by the current employees.
