A friend of mine was told by a noted railroad artist that he felt rods up conveyed a more dynamic feeling. It seems you agree.

One problem with rods down is when the bottom of the wheels are obscured, like on your bridge shot, it just doesn't look right. I try for rods down but rods up works for me as well.
