There are hundreds for sure if not thousands of low level
and higher sites around the western states. Many of the
mines were never closed off and the waste remains.
Some of the worst are fenced or cleaned up. Most are
probably not. A few places are called 'Legacy' sites because
they never will be fully cleaned up unless they leak and receive
periodic monitoring.
The early days of the radiation industry created a lot of
rail shipments as did the 40-50's. Early on most processing
was done in Europe then more locally as milling evolved.
