Mr. Willis was a fixture on the Chili Line as conductor from the early 1930s and probably before then. Trains 425 and 426 were second class mixed trains so they were high paying runs. He had three round trips per week because the Chili didn't run on Sunday. Conductors could make as much money as working the San Juan.
James Pheney out of Durango was the senior conductor on the Chili Line in the 1930s. Your grandfather was the conductor on the opposite numbered crew. After Mr. Pheney retired D.H. Hines took his spot and your grandfather moved up to No. 1. John Clarke and J.J. Walsh were the regular engineers until the late 1930s.
Your grandfather was not the only crewman who lived in Santa Fe. Engineer John Law, who retired in the 1920s, also lived there.
