Interesting, Fritz -
It's amazing how little things like that photo can have a big influence in our lives; much to the benefit of the town of Silverton and the entire region in your case! Back in August, 1975, I just happened to walk through the living room at my girlfriend's home during the 30 or 40 seconds when the TV news was showing #4449 being coupled to the Freedom Train in Chicago. A week later I was on the road for what turned out to be a six month odyssey (see my 40-years-ago thread lower down on this page). One minute earlier or later and I might have remained just an ordinary foamer instead of a hard-core instigator, and two or three engines I can think of might have never suffered the indignity of being painted in circus colors.

p.s. In the 1968 photo of #478 that I posted a couple of weeks ago she appears to be missing not only the 'DRAIN DAILY' admonition but also the step to the air pump and the flag box on the side of the smokebox that appear in your 1940's pic (see [
ngdiscussion.net], lazybones.)
