IMHO, it's time to bust 'em ALL up and start ALL over -
Norfolk Southern plus Southern Pacific = NSP - then you could have The Crescent (occasionally Steam-Powered by either #611 -or- #4449) from D.C. via et-Lanna, Gnawleans, Ail-Passeau, El-Aye and 'Frisco awl the weigh to Portland.
ATSF plus CSX = Chesapeake Bay and Santa Fe (including the D&RGW and Wobbly) - a mid-continent contender vs above & below.
ConRail plus U.P. = Penn-Central Pacific - U.P. (including S.P.'s line over Donner) - another mid-continent contender vs the two above.
Lackawannabe Great Northern Pacific - The northernmost of the Atlantic-Pacific transcons, plus whatever regional railroads make sense.
- Willie
p.s. Being unfamiliar with the north-south routes, I'll leave ICGULF, etc., up to youse guys who are more knowledgeable to determine / propose.
- Sincerely,
Willie (Wm. Claude Johnson-Barr III, Esq.)
