We did a lot of research when we planned these trips. A typical D&RGW flanger train would be two locomotives, a flanger and two cabooses. Other times the Jordan spreader was added to that consist. The extra caboose was for the shovel gang, since there would be a need to dig out switches and switch stands as well as chopping ice out of road crossings. If the flanger was planning on cleaning out sidings and likely to be out on the line for an extended period, it would usually be two locomotives, a flanger, the Jordan spreader, sometimes a water tank and other supply cars, plus a couple of outfit cars with one caboose. Sometimes there would be an equipment flat with a bulldozer for digging out deep cuts.
We only have one engine in Antonito over the winter and the Jordan spreader isn't operable, but we are going to simulate a flanger train that will be out on the line for a couple of days, so we will have the engine, the flanger, a water tank, a gon for coal (actually the rider car), a box car for supplies, the cook car, an outfit car and two cabooses. Got to have room for the shovel gang (the charter participants!). If we have to dig out the wye at Big Horn on the first day, we will have an equipment flat with a front end loader as far as Big Horn. Beyond there it will be a straight flanger train.
As far as we can tell, the only time the Rio Grande regularly ran a flanger in a freight train was on the Crested Butte branch where a solid train of coal gons would have a flanger right behind the engine.
