They are certainly helped by the climate - it is so dry!!
Here in Indiana, old structures tend not to last,
partly because the land is mostly more valuable,
so at some point someone will notice that they could
put something else there, and partly because the moisture
which means that almost anything will grow also means that
eventually most anything will rot.
