It is sometimes forgotten that the Congressional Medal of Honor was first awarded to those Union men who were on the Great Locomotive Chase. It is a great movie, but it is based on an even greater book by William Pittenger, who was one of the participants. Soon after the Civil War, Pittenger wrote a book that was originally called "Daring and Suffering". I have read it and it is fabulous! Most folks have no idea of what those guys went through. No movie can possibly convey the suspense and chase. It was far more than a high speed chase with locomotives. There was much suffering they went through as well as adventure and intrigue of the highest sort that captured the attention of the entire country.
"Daring and Suffering" was eventually renamed to the "Great Locomotive Chase." Copies of the book are still available under either name. I obtained my copy off Ebay some time ago, and I am sure it still pops up every so often.
