Hank, you're probably right. Marshall Pass required helpers to run light from Gunnison to Sargent for Eastward trains, about 30 miles, then either 48 miles back light to Gunnison or 25 miles light to Salida. Westward train helpers would run 11 miles to Mears Jct then 25 miles light back to Salida.

12th Sub helpers for Westward trains had a 61 mile run to Gato but, until later years, would stay with the train into Durango. I'm not sure about Eastward trains though. Helper out of Durango to Falfa? 9.9 mile run back. Helper out of Chama running light 46 miles to Gato then helping Gato to Chama? Or Durango helper running light Falfa to Gato, 51 miles then helping from there to Chama?
