It's almost certainly Creosote, guys -
Every wooden trestle I've even been close enough to sniff has smelled strongly of the stuff. Somewhere in my trunk of HOn3 stuff - forgotten when I converted to 12"/foot scale - there's a can of ModelCraft(?) Creosote Stain that looks and IIRC even smells like the real thing - just thinned out a lot.
And BTW, Rex Beistle got it right - it's NOT "Russo's Photo", it's Don Hills' "photo that Russo posted".
