I totally agree with you there!
Starting in the late forties, IIRC, the S.P. figured that bright smokeboxes made the engines more visible and thus reduced grade-crossing accidents; even the cab-forwards got a big rectangle of aluminium on their fronts. D&RGW apparently thought likewise, although their coal burner's faces were harder to keep clean than S.P.'s (mostly) oil burners.
The silver fronts definitely make for brighter photos!
