It's a bit hard to tell, Daylight -
Because of the dirt & grime you mention - but I'm pretty sure that both #483 and #484 had aluminum-painted journal covers in late August, 1968 - see the second photo on [
ngdiscussion.net]. And K-28 #476 was similar in June, 1960 - see the first two photos on [
ngdiscussion.net].
K-37s #491 and #497 appear to have had black journal covers on October 20, 1962 in this photo by Tom Gildersleeve

OTOH, K-36 #483's covers looked aluminum - but VERY dirty - the following day
