If you want to get your type rating in a B-17 you might consider volunteering for the Collings Foundation in your "free time".
You'd need a commercial, multi-engine, instrument rating, but they are in need of pilots. I place traveling with these guys up there with riding with you on the Eureka on the C&TS back in '97. Both are incredible experiences!
Here's a couple of photos of our move from Casper to Denver. We were delayed by weather for 24 hours and then had to dodge clouds and rainstorms all the way for 2.5 hours. We even climbed up to 11,500" to go VFR on the top for a little while (and it was quite cold at that altitude in a drafty bomber):
