At one point they did do a doubleheader where the Cumbres Express was cut off and the riders rode back to Chama with the lead engine. But, considering they probably didn't sell enough tickets to call for two seperate trains, they combined it into one with an occasional doubleheader for the big trains.

That's at least how I understand it.
