The loss of the old grade above Chatanooga was largely caused by the widening, into the mountainside, of the highway. The old toll road was narrower.

The loss of ties over the years is sad, as was the demolishion of the final tram tower and loading ramps below the upper road (a short distance west of the small mine adit).
