It's not often - In fact it's extremely rare -
That Willie gets ANYTHING right. But this time - much as I hate to admit it,
for once, I have to agree with him.

IF the rumor of a swap even being considered is true, the essentials are:
1) The D&S wants to in ADD a K-36 to its fleet, NOT trade one K-36 for another.
2) Supposedly the D&S would offer K-28 #478 in exchange for C&TS K-36 #483.
a. #478 needs her 1472 day overhaul, plus (based on a recent photo) at least a cross-
compound air pump.
b. #483 needs a MAJOR restoration, including a cross-compound air pump, some rods,
and LOTS of other parts.
IMHO, (sentimental attachment to #483 aside)*, this would be a good deal for the C&TS. The C&TS would gain another spare engine for normal duty on the east end any time - and for helper duty on the west end - at a much lower cost than restoring #483. #478 could also be used on shorter trains (up to six cars) from Chama to Cumbres, including the Cinder Bear trains and other "Cumbres Turns", and - most important - having a K-28 would SOMEDAY enable the C&TS to re-create a five- or six-car San Juan express.

THANK YOU, Willie, for cutting through the Gordian Knot, and laying out the facts as they appear today. Of course there MAY be more to #478's current retirement from D&S's active roster than meets the eye, but
IF her only problem is the need for a 1472-day inspection & overhaul, then I'm with you - if this proposed trade is more than a rumor, I'm all for it!
