The last revenue freights on the D&RGW narrow gauge depart Chama.
The first to leave was #483
; she headed southwest out of town, and
then turned westward toward Durango
:
Meanwhile, #484 had been turned at the wye, and was ready to help #498 up the hill
:
Ernie led us to a great spot overlooking Lobato, no longer accessible without serious trespassing. Since it was
such a long shot, I couldn't resist trying that &*(%#)! 2X extender on my new 70-150 zoom lens. BIG Mistake -
even a really good scanner can't de-blur these negs
:
While Ernie headed to an overlook of Hamilton's Point,* I scrambled down to Cresco Tank barely ahead of the train
:
A close-up of #498 at Cresco, then three more long shots - unfortunately, with the extender again
:
The above finished off my two rolls of B&W; the color shots taken later that day have been posted previously under the
subject of "Forty Years Ago",** so that's it for now. Bosco & Otis are ready to go out for a while, and I haven't had my
dinner yet
