perfect fit....
This engine is being rebuilt by the Mountain States Railroad & Logging Historical Association. It was built in 1920 as a 70-ton 3 truck Climax for the Moore-Keppel Lumber Co. (the same outfit that owned D&GVR #3). It was purchased for Cass in the early 1970's. Since then it has had a pretty tough existence including getting cooked in the 1972 Cass Shop fire. I has been a long road to get this far. As M-K Lumber it was #6, Cass intended to re-number it #9 in honor of the original #9 of West Virginia Pulp & Paper being the only other Climax on the roster. I don't know what number they have decided on (if they have decided). If it keeps its original number, we will have three number sixes on the roster (Heisler #6, WM Shay #6 and M-KLCo #6) - perfect for a devil worship excursion.....
This boiler is not the original for the #6(9). The original was deemed too badly damaged in the fire and this one was obtained somewhere in the northwest where it was used on a same class engine. This boiler is a bit newer than the original in that is has flexible staybolts, which the original did not. One of the reasons for the test fit was to see if the flex-bolt caps and sleeves would clear the frame.
