I've never heard anything about the D&RG 2-4-0 type wanting to leave the track more than other types. Period comments suggest its main fault was that it didn't run as smoothly as 4-4-0's could, and was thus slower. D&RG comments suggest it tended to prefer running its 2-4-0's at a sustained speed in the 15 MPH range; more than that and they tended to hunt a bit. Three car trains were typical. The first 4-4-0's, class 37 of 1876, were ordinarily used out of Denver on 4-car trains (sometimes more) at about 20 MPH average running speed.
