Two things:

The wye in ALA had to be intact to the end so that ng passenger trains could be turned.

The SG switch engines did not go through the draw with NG cars. They had to stop in the draw then go around and pick them up with the other end. In that case they needed the coupler on the other end.

I think there was only one set of air operated draft gear and it went on whatever engine was the designated switcher.

...make that three things.
