Steve Jackson was the best boss I have ever had. When I was the super of the LK&P, I tried to handle things "the way Steve would have" - but I'm sure I never came very close.
He had a way of making problems just seem to melt away. I remember one day in the spring of 1981 when several of us were trying to put a driver spring back into one of the engines. It was giving us a really hard time, although there were about 6 of us all working together with prybars and blocks. After a while, Steve came around and asked his signature question: "What's the deal, guys?" We tried to explain all the ways we had attempted to force that spring into place. Then he just calmly said, "Excuse me, let me have a look at it." He took a prybar, and with a firm "Uhhnn!", he just popped that massive spring into place like it was no problem at all.
That's the way it was with all the problems we would have. Steve would come around, and the troubles would just evaporate!
Heck, for the last 30 years that I have been away, I have always kind of secretly hoped that some day I would come back and work in the shop with Steve again. I guess I waited a little too long.
Congratulations on a career to be proud of, Steve, and best wishes for your next adventure!
