And then AT&T wanted to compete with IBM and others with personnal computers. It allowed the 1980 era break-up of AT&T.
1) AT&T became a long distance only and computer company. They could not remain competitive and was liquidated in the late 1990s (?).
2) One of the Baby Bells (started as Southwestern Bell) purchased the name and took it as their own. Sort of like Gillford took Pan Am (railroad connection)
I recall in the mid-1990s I went to visit a friend during his lunch. He worked for Southern Bell. I went into the building and asked for him. They could not find him even in the phone book. It finally dawned on me and I got a laugh on it - I had walked into the AT&T building a block or so away from Bell South
The AT&T building is now the Atlanta HQ of Norfolk Southern.
