In the 1970's George Werner and I ran photo charters on Fegua, the old IRCA in Guatemala (that's the ng. angle). I was living in Washington, DC and one evening I got a phone call enquiring about one of our trips. The guy was calling from California and stayed on the phone for over an hour. Back in those days long distance calls were quite expensive, but he didn't seem to care. And he subsequently joined us for a trip to Guatemala. His name was Robert Edgar, and he and his wife owned the Dorris Telephone Company, in far northern California. It was one of those independent little phone companies like the one John mentioned at beautiful downtown Ludlow. I seem to remember Robert saying he had something like 60 "subscribers" in a few small downs just south of Klamath Falls. John's comment reminded me of that, so I googled Dorris Telephone Company. Apparently it still exists, now the California Oregon Telephone Company, and provides both voice and data services to the same small towns. Apparently it was something of a technological pioneer because unlike the Ludlow company the Dorris company is proud of the fact it was all dial by 1953.
