Thanks for clearing up these questions.
It is no wonder that I could not remember the type of bridge. I just assumed that it was visible from the highway, and I do take mental photos of railroad things as I travel.
Since the pile bridge works at that location, the river must not have much of a slope there. Even in the springtime flood, the water velocity would be small. I would guess that it would still be necessary to clear debris on a fairly regular basis.
